Discription: what role do practices and ideals of gender and sexuality play in the legitimization of state power in the secular state? To anwer this question the seminar will examine the notion of "sexual citizenship", i.e., the inner and erotic character of the idealized citizen who is allowed to fully participate in the nation. Contestations over religious symbols and practices will focus our analysis. Thus, as case studies we will study the debates about the veiling of Muslim women in Germany and France, the topic of same-sex marriage in the US; and the role of women in Indian secularism. |
