Inhalt The course aims to explore the practical and conceptual interplay between science and law, as it is crystallised most actuely in the context of biotechnology. It will be organized in three parts:
i) the relationship between boundary drawing in science and intellectual property law
ii) the political economy of biotechnology
iii) the representation of science of lwa.
In particular, the course examines the relationship between biotechnological practices and patent strategies in which tensions about the respective nature of knowledge have arisen most prominently.
Lernziele The seminar should provide the student with
- an understanding of different concepts of sciences and biotechnology
- a historical overview of the development of biotechnological practices
- the ability to critically analyse the conceptual relationship, as well as friction, between law and sciences
- an overview and appreciation of intellectual property rights, especially patents, pertaining to biotechnology.
Voraussetzungen Advance reading and preparation are essential. Close reading of key texts will be the pre-requisite for interesting and stimulating conversations about some of the most interesting questions about wandering concepts between law and science.

Hinweise More generally, the seminar will place emphasis on succinct essay writing skills. To this end, guidance will be provided.

Literatur Readings are drawn from a wide variety of disciplines, such as history of science, science studies, law, anthropology and cultural studies, as they pertain to our understanding of science and law. We will also read legal cases, which have demonstrated existing predicaments forcefully, especially in the area of intellectual property law meeting biotechnology. Difficult to obtain readings will be distributed ahead of the seminars.
