This course focuses on the determinants and effects of trade flows and trade policy measures. As for trade flows, we will explore questions like: Who exports what? For instance, why does Bangladesh primarily export textiles, while Switzerland is strong in exporting chemicals? What are the benefits of international trade for the involved countries? And how are these benefits distributed within and across countries? To answer these questions, we will study traditional theories of trade, which rely on perfect competition, as well as modern trade theories that assume imperfect competition and emphasize economies of scale, product variety, or productivity differences. Regarding trade policy, we will examine the use and consequences of various measures that governments adopt towards international trade (such as tariffs, subsidies, or quotas). |
