Migrants do not only bring their work force but also carry cultural and religious identification of the country left behind. Despite processes of adaptation to the modern and secular societies in North America and Europe, religion and culture often continue to play a prominent role in everyday lives of the migrants. Sooner or later, migrants set up religious and cultural societies to retain the practices, faith and habits of the country of origin. Generally, immigrants are eager to connect to relatives, people and socio-political affairs in the former home country: they send money and images on a regular basis, take decisions in family affairs, might sponsor a school or a temple, consult religious leaders, participate in elections, arrange for regular visits and much more. In fact, as US-American scholar Peggy Levitt observed, ties between migrants and non-migrants can be so strong and widespread that migration also radically transforms the lives of individuals who stay home. Though separated by physical distance, migrants and non-migrants occupy a transnational social space. In this master seminar, we will read and discuss Levitt’s cardinal book “God Needs No Passport”, added by pivotal theoretical perspectives. This will help us to gain a deeper understanding of the various transnational flows and influences involved in the back and forth exchanges with regard to people, religion and culture. |
| Lernziele |
The aim of the seminar is to understand the forms of transnational cultural and religious exchange between migrants and non-migrants as well as to analyse influences, interests, and changes involved on both sides. |
