As a result of globalisation of labour markets, demographic pressures in sending and receiving States, environmental disasters, political changes in sending States etc. international migration is a topic of ever-increasing interest and relevance. The course focuses on the international legal framework that regulates the flow of people across international borders as regular or irregular migrants including the rights and responsibilities of States as they pertain to international migration and the protection of human rights of migrants. Topics will include: contemporary patterns of international migration; nationality and statelessness; regulation of entry and exit of persons; refugees and asylum seekers; international labour migration, international labour law and protection of non-nationals; international Human Rights of Migrants; trafficking in persons and smuggling of migrants; international, regional and bilateral migration processes; emerging migration issues. |
