Inhalt Law-and-literature and law-and-film studies have long-since been recognised, particularly in the Anglo-American context, as an invaluable component of legal education. Explorations of the relations between legal and fictional texts offer the promise of generating enlightening insights in several key areas: literary and cinematic sources can be used to engender a richer intellectual history of law, as a testing ground for legal-sociological and/or legal-philosophical ideas, or as a means to ‘humanise’ law by granting access to ethical issues frequently masked in legal discourse. The recent ‘cultural turn’ in legal scholarship has, moreover, opened new perspectives for reading literary texts and films as cultural objects that, engaged critically, provide for deeper understandings of the social operation(s) of law and its capacity for justice.
In this module, students will explore the potential of literature and film as a source of critical analysis of the law. Alongside a selection of classic and canonical texts, we shall also consider a number of modern films, plays and novels and their engagements with contemporary issues, including inter alia human rights, terrorism and genocide.
