Umfang 2 Semesterwochenstunden
Inhalt You have to write a paper based on your own research. You have to write a thesis. But how? This seminar is about the practice of doing research; doing good research; doing good research that matters in the real world.
Our topics will include: (1) research questions—how to ask an exciting and important one; (2) concepts—where to get them from and what’s a concept to begin with; (3) arguments—how to ensure your arguments are cogent; (4) writing style—how to write up your paper so that it’s forceful and doesn’t put your readers to sleep; and (5) practice: how to do research that makes a difference in the world. You want your research to be practically valuable to other people, to particular organizations or groups you care about, or to larger social and political actors. You hope it can help things change for the better. How in the world can you accomplish that? And isn’t social science supposed to be value-free and politically neutral?
This seminar is addressed to students in all social science and humanities disciplines.
