‘Crisis’ is a frequently revoked but often poorly theorized and analyzed concept in political science and its neighboring disciples. Yet, crises are an important and recurring phenomenon and part of every political system, which deserve close scholarly attention. They usually are characterized by high levels of threat, urgency, and uncertainty. At the same time, crises might also facilitate change and open paths for reform and progress. During the past decade, the European Union (EU) has been facing a whole number of crises, including the Eurozone and migration crises, Brexit, and a rule-of-law crisis in several member states. As an 'incomplete polity', the EU arguably is prone to crises. All these crises were different with regards to their origins, courses and outcomes but they all challenged certain policy regimes and even the entire EU. This seminar combines the phenomenon of political crisis with the European integration process and the politics of the EU. It seeks to familiarize students with important concepts, theories and analytical tools of 'crisis' as well as to broaden their knowledge about supranational policymaking within the framework of the EU. We draw from both political science literature and from more practical accounts by political practitioners. This seminar is very much discussion-based, giving students ample opportunities to state their point of view, challenge concepts, and discover room for future specialization and research.
