Inhalt

Modern economic and financial markets are money based social constructs in which individuals and institutions meet to exchange goods, services, skills, information and knowledge. From an economic and a philosophical point of view, we will explore how markets have evolved, their justification, the role of decision makers - both individual and corporation - and investigate how markets are said to “fail”. In particular, we will discuss the moral limits of markets and explore which normative ethical approach could be useful in “taming” them and their participan

Lernziele Having actively participated in the seminar, you will be able to:
(1) Define and describe what markets are and present supporting and critical argu-ments for their existence;
(2) Reproduce the most important moral questions arising from these positions;
(3) Read and understand academic papers related to markets and morals;
(4) Write a critical “response-paper” related to one of the weekly economic/ philosophical session readings discussed in our course.
Voraussetzungen Attendance of at least one proseminar in philosophy with completed (graded) written seminar paper. (Exception: free study achievements)
