Health Services Research analyses the effectiveness of health interventions in the real world. In contrast to medical research, which focuses on the development and evaluation of clinical treatments, health services research tries to find the most effective ways to organize, manage, finance, and continuously improve care and support for patients and citizens. Inherently multidisciplinary, it incorporates methods and insights from health economics, psychology, sociology, epidemiology, medicine, and management.
For the main part of the course, we will follow the advice of Prof. Dawn-Marie Walker who said “The best way to learn about research is to actually do it”. Students (individually or in groups of 2-3 people) will conduct their own statistical analysis using real world data provided by a large Swiss insurer. The first step is to formulate a research question, and identify the aim and objectives of the study. The second step is to conduct a descriptive and graphical analysis of the data, and identify potential areas of concern. The third step is the statistical analysis and summary of the results. Each of these steps will be discussed in class, and code examples in the statistical software R will be provided. Previous experience with R or another statistical software is a plus, but not a prerequisite.
Suggested topics for research projects:
Regional and temporal variation in the use of health care services in Switzerland (e.g. orthopedic surgery, screening tests, antidepressants)
The effects of the Covid-19 pandemic on the use of health care services (e.g. mental care, preventive services) |
