This course examines music and sound as a means to understanding South Asian religious life. Music and sound are ways of experiencing divinity and play important roles in producing social structure. By extension, religio-musical performances are vital to South Asian modernity, politics, and social identities. This course engages closely with
ethnographic themes in anthropology, sound studies, and ethnomusicology. Upon completion, students will be able to: - Demonstrate knowledge of historical, cultural, and religious contexts of music in South Asia, including key ideas, texts, genres, and practices.
- Apply basic skills in observing, describing, and analyzing musical performances.
- Independently carry out a structured research project involving an abstract, literature review, first draft, and final draft.
- Collaborate with and present their work to colleagues. Note: This course does not require prior knowledge in religion, music, or South Asia.
