The South Pacific (including Australia, New Guinea and New Zealand) has been the place of complex prehistorical and historical processes since at least 65 000 years, with multiple waves of human migration occurring until and beyond the colonial times. These movements and the extended time-span over which they took place have produced sociocultural specificities while retaining elements of their original historical backgrounds. In this lecture series, we will discuss the deep-historical processes which have led to the definition (and to the questioning) of large cultural areas (Aboriginal Australia, Papuan societies, Island Melanesia, Micronesia and Polynesia) and illustrate how these processes have shaped colonial and post-colonial responses and forms of resilience. In addition to illustrating historical and contemporary anthropological facts, we will also show how the analytical methods of an emerging conjectural historical approach contribute to enrichening and sometimes interrogate former and contemporary archaeological and genetical conclusions. |
