This seminar explores
the intersection of gender and technology in contemporary digital societies
through an anthropological lens. Students will examine how gender shapes and is
shaped by digital technologies, social media platforms, and online communities,
while considering how these dynamics vary across different cultural contexts.
We will also question broader sociocultural implications of the
gender-technology nexus for identity, power relations, and social organization.
We will analyse how gender influences both the production and the use of
digital technologies, as well as how a gender perspective might help look for
"a different voice" while investigating digital words.
Students completing
this seminar will develop a theoretical and empirical understanding of the
gender-technology nexus. They will master key theoretical frameworks from
digital anthropology and gender studies, enabling them to analyze how social
media platforms and digital technologies reproduce or challenge existing gender
hierarchies. The course will also equip students with analytical tools to
examine how gender, along with intersecting factors such as class, race, and
geographic location, influence technological access, digital literacy, and
online participation across various cultural contexts. Students will also
strengthen their reflexivity regarding their own experiences of gender and
technology, and how these shape their analytical perspective and fieldwork
opportunities.
