In this
block seminar, students will gain the necessary knowledge to understand the
political aspects of the climate crisis, with a specific focus on climate
change mitigation policy. Students will learn about the origins of
environmental crises, their effects on political systems, the potentialities
and difficulties of finding solutions to them. The first part of the course
focuses on understanding contemporary environmental crises through an
interdisciplinary social sciences lens, introducing the key concepts of the
course, as well as the fundamentals science behind climate change. The second
part introduces students to the different ways to conceptualise the climate
crisis as a political phenomenon. The third part will go deeper in the
political challenges of climate policymaking and decarbonisation, drawing from
the newest contributions from comparative politics and political economy.

Topic-specific learning objectives include:
• mobilising key concepts of climate politics ;
• contrasting different approaches to framing the climate crisis and how they matter for policy solutions ;
• understanding the policy options to tackling the climate crisis and critically reflecting on their drivers ;
• engaging with most recent developments in environmental and climate politics research.
More broadly, the course seeks the development of skills relating to:
• engaging critically with recent academic scholarship;
• identifying key messages in different approaches and weighing them against empirical observations;
• preparing and giving oral presentations in English ;
• engaging with other students in class discussions. |
