The course will provide an overview of methodological issues relevant to conducting survey research in the health sciences. These issues include the development of research questions, operationalization of concepts, survey development and administration, sampling and data collection, data preparation and analysis, and so on. This involves both practical familiarization through a survey project and a more fundamental theoretical discussion of relevant considerations. |
| Lernziele |
The overarching aim of the course is twofold: On the one hand, students will be equipped with a working knowledge and the skills to develop and conduct independent survey research projects in the health sciences. On the other hand, students will also develop a more fundamental understanding of this methodology to assess and contextualize survey projects in the broader field of scientific conduct in social sciences.
More specifically, students will be able to…
• …develop suitable research questions to answer with survey research.
• …differentiate various approaches to surveys to select an appropriate one.
• …conceptualize, test, conduct, analyze, and present parts of a survey project.
• …highlight different logics behind survey projects.
• …understand issues of quality in survey methodology.
• …connect survey methodology to current issues around information and communication technology. |

Teaching methods:
The course features both lecture style sessions and sessions where students actively engage in (group) work, presentations, and more. Through this combination, students will develop and pretest a small survey study to cover relevant aspects of the research process. These survey projects are started early in the semester and carried out in groups. |
