Inhalt This interdisciplinary module offers an in-depth exploration the role of sex and gender in health, disease, and medical practice. It examines gender-related health disparities, biases in healthcare, and the implications of personalized medicine. Students will critically engage with contemporary topics such as gender-inclusive healthcare, biomedical research equity, and technological advancements in FemTech. Through interactive discussions, case studies, and research-based learning, this course aims to equip students with a nuanced understanding of how gender and sex influence medical treatment, policy, and public health.

Each session (two double lessons - 3 hours) includes a lecture, interactive discussions and/or activity, and case-based learning.
1. Gender Medicine & the Biopsychosocial Model
• Moving away from a purely biomedical approach.
• How gender perspectives shape holistic healthcare.
• Implications for medical education and practice.
2. Gender Medicine & Personalized Medicine
• The shift from population-based to individualized medical care.
• How gender perspectives shape precision medicine.
3. Hormones & Health Across the Lifespan
• Male and female health
• The influence of puberty, contraception, pregnancy, and menopause/andropause
• Gender differences in hormone-related diseases and treatments.
4. Transgender Health & Medicine
• How are transgender individuals classified and treated in healthcare?
• Common health challenges and access barriers.
• Societal perceptions and their impact on medical care.
5. FemTech and Drug Development – The Future of Gender-Specific Health Technologies
• Historical and ongoing exclusion of women in clinical trials and data processing.
• Strategies for ensuring equitable representation.
• Innovations in reproductive and women’s health technology.
• Ethical concerns and commercial interests.
• Does the market truly need gender-specific health tech?
6. Gender Bias in Healthcare
• Implicit biases among healthcare professionals and patients.
• The impact of stereotypes on medical treatment.
• Gender bias in Artificial Intelligence.
• Strategies to mitigate bias in medical practice.
7. Intersexuality & Puberty-Blocking Interventions
• Medical and ethical considerations.
• Current debates and controversies.
8. Sex & Gender in Mental Health
• How gender norms shape mental health diagnoses and treatments.
• Differences in prevalence and manifestation of mental health disorders.
9. Chronic Diseases & Gender Differences
• Cardiovascular diseases, autoimmune disorders, and metabolic conditions.
• Why do men and women experience these diseases differently?
10. Reproductive Rights & Health Policy
• Gender disparities in access to reproductive healthcare.
• Ethical and legal challenges in reproductive medicine.
11. Workplace & Occupational Health
• How gender influences workplace stress, occupational diseases, and medical leave policies.
• The role of gender in physician and healthcare provider well-being.
12. Gender Perspectives in End-of-Life Care & Palliative Medicine
• How gender affects pain management, caregiving roles, and patient preferences.
13. Final Workshop & Reflection (28th May 2026)
• Interactive case study presentations.
• Discussion: Future research directions and policy implications

• Assess the social, ethical, and political implications of gender-related medical issues.
• Develop critical perspectives on contemporary debates in gender and health sciences.

Leistungsnachweis • Presentation of case study during semester (30%)
- Case to be presented will be provided in the first week
• Final project on a selected gender medicine topic including short presentation (70%)
- Submission of short proposal by 23rd March 2026 (feedback by 30th March)
- Written assignment
- Short presentation
