This advanced course deepens expertise in qualitative inquiry for health research by focusing on three common data sources (individual interviews, focus groups, and documents), and by comparing three analysis approaches widely used in the field: reflexive thematic analysis, framework analysis and qualitative content analysis. We highlight how these analytical choices not only shape study design and reporting but are also suited to different research purposes. You will practice concrete techniques (e.g. interview guide development, document sampling, coding) through hands-on exercises, including an introduction to qualitative analysis software (MaxQDA). Across all research steps, methodological and analytical decisions are explicitly linked to quality and reporting expectations (e.g. COREQ/SPQR for reporting, CASP for appraisal), so you learn to both conduct and write up qualitative studies to editorial standards. Thesis clinics offered during the course provide structured, method-open consultation on ongoing or planned qualitative master’s projects. |

By the end of the course, you will be able to justify fit-for-purpose designs for interview, focus group, and document studies; plan and critically reflect on interview and focus-group conduct (e.g. probing and group dynamics); systematically sample and appraise documents (e.g. authenticity and credibility); make an informed choice among commonly used analysis approaches and apply them appropriately; document your study and findings transparently in line with quality and reporting standards; and defend your methodological decisions in a concise methods brief. |
