This course will critically examine the question of how societies respond to their most serious crimes. It is designed to develop students’ analystical socio-legal skills and in particular the application of human rights principles to a specific area of law and criminal justice. It will consider the application of extreme forms of punishment globally, including the use of the death penalty, corporal punishment and the most common ultimate sanction, life imprisonment. It will assess the extent to which current law and practice meets international human rights standards. It will also critically examine the role of abolition, and consider alternative approaches to punishing serious crimes. |
