What happens to politics when a crisis strikes? In ordinary times, policymaking follows a predictable rhythm — consultation, legislation, implementation. But crises disrupt this cycle, compressing time, reshaping political space, and forcing decision-makers to act under pressure and uncertainty. This course explores how crises redefine what is politically feasible and desirable, how institutions adapt (or break), and how power dynamics shift when urgency replaces deliberation.
Students will examine major crises of the 21st century — from financial turmoil and pandemics to war, inflation, and climate emergencies — and assess their political and economic consequences. Blending theory and practice, the course introduces key concepts from political science and international political economy before moving toward applied analysis. Through case studies, presentations, and “what-if” simulations, students will step into the role of policymakers to understand crisis management as both a test of leadership and a driver of institutional change.

On successful completion of the crisis seminar, students should be able to analyze in an interdisciplinary fashion recent crisis-episodes and their economic consequences. They will be able to reconstruct crises that marked the 21st century by demonstrating causal roots that led to them, distinguishing endogenous from exogenous factors, and identifying actors, interests and strategies. Finally, they will be able to analyze the interaction of political phenomena with economic trends, identify policy options and produce brief analysis reports for policymakers. |
