Inhalt In the 21st century, the activity of governments and the policies they develop are under constant scrutiny by citizens and the media. In this context, citizens’ opinions are fundamental to the functioning of any democracy. This course proposes the study of public opinion in Europe from a comparative perspective. It discusses the concept, definition, and different ways of measuring public opinion according to the most relevant debates in the fields of communication, political psychology, and political science. It will also analyze the main determinants of public opinion (traditional media and, especially, social media) and some of its most relevant political consequences, including the spread of fake news, polarization, and resistance to gender equality.
Lernziele Evaluation of the credibility of the existing theories about the psychological and political processes involved in the formation of public opinion
Understanding the role of the media in informing and influencing public opinion, with a special emphasis on social media
Understanding the effects of public opinion on the daily world of politics, including misinformation, fake-news, polarization, and resistance to gender equality
Voraussetzungen The course requires knowledge of written and spoken English
Sprache Englisch
