Inhalt The International Society for Krishna Consciousness, better known as the Hare Krishna Movement, was founded in 1965 and has seen a rather successful development in the forty-two years of its existence despite a number of internal crises and, at times, extreme external pressure. In this course, we will study the historical backgrounds of this religious movement in Vaishnavism, ISKCON's history as a religious movement in the Western world, its teachings and practices as well as the processes of its global dispersion. The historical and empirical studies will be embedded in theoretical reflection on a number of issues in the study of religion, namely the concepts of new religious movement, religious practice, stereotypes and stigmatisation, the global religious marketplace and others. For successful participation, you need to read the relevant literature for the course and present one paper. Information of the schedule of the course and on relevant literature will be handed out in the first session.
