| Inhalt |
In recent years, terror attacks and outbreaks of violent conflicts have drawn public attention to the state of Hindu-Muslim relations in India. As 12% of India’s population (i.e. ca. 125 million people in India) are Muslims, the issue of coexistence between the Hindu majority and the Muslim minority in India becomes crucial. From another perspective, the Muslim influence on Indian culture and religion is undeniably huge. Many of the sights tourists visit in India date from the Islamic period of Indian history, and a number of Hindu-religious innovations that emerged between the early modern period and the nineteenth century clearly display facets of Islamic doctrine and practice. In this course, we will follow the history of Muslims in India and their interactions and relations with Hindus from the first invasions of Muslim armies into India to the present time. One aim of the course will be to get a very basic knowledge of South Asian (religious) history from early modern times to the present. A second aim will be to get an understanding of the processes that led to the present religious and political situation in South Asia with a special focus on the developments in the 19th and 20th centuries. |
