Inhalt This course examines and starts to theorise the ways in which religion has 'gone public' in Europe in the last two decades. it begins with a critical examination of existing models of 'public religion'. These focus on religion (mainly churches) in alliance with (a) the state and (b) with 'civil society' (a conceopt will define). It is suggested that these models need to be updat3ed in the light of recent developments, which include the growth of new forms of spirituality, migration and religious pluralisation, the 'marketisation' and 'mediatisation' of religion, the growth of religious 'identy politics', and a paradoxical mix of cultural 'deregulation' and politico-legal 're-regulation' of religion. Having examined these developments, the course will discuss new models and theories which might be able to accommodate them, and consider how far the existing schemes for making sense of religion in the public sphere need to be modified. Finally, the course will move into normative territory, and the realm of political theory, and debate whether and how far religion should be allowed to enter the public sphere in Europe. The aims of the course are to analyse the strength and weakness of existing models of 'public religion', in the light of recent empirical developments in religion in Europe; -to familiarise students with these empirical developments and with theoretical concepts such as 'public sphere', 'civil society', and religious 'privatisation'; -to engage together in ebate about alternative theories and concepts for understanding - and regulating - public religion today.
