Inhalt The global financial crisis of 2007/09 and the subsequent and still unresolved Eurozone crisis highlighted how vulnerable the global financial systems is and forced governments and central banks to take unprecedented steps in order to stabilize the system. Policies adopted in response to this twin crisis will profoundly influence and shape the financial and monetary systems for the foreseeable future. This course explores the impact of recent developments on the institutional and legal framework of the financial and monetary systems. Topics to be covered include the advent of financial stability as a new mandate for supervisory agencies and central banks, the policy responses adopted by international standard setters in response to the too big to fail-problem and a critical assessment of post crisis regulation. A second part will deal with the evolving role of central banks, including unconventional monetary policy and their role in crisis management, and its impact on the independence and governance of central banks. Finally, the course will deal with monetary integration in Europe and analyse the reasons for the persistent crisis of the European Monetary Union with a focus on legal issues. The mandatory seminar “https://www.unilu.ch/weiterbildung/rf/weiterbildung-recht/tagungen-und-seminare/news/eventdetail/the-brave-new-world-of-central-banking/” with external experts will provide an opportunity to discuss current topics in more detail.
