This is an introductory course to the field of public international law (PIL). The course seeks to provide a solid understanding of the fundamentals of law that underlie the contemporary global legal system. The course will start with the essentials of public international law and introduce students to key concepts and discussions in PIL, such as those around the fundamental principles of international law, its sources and subjects, the principles and application of treaty law interpretation and state responsibility. In addition, the course will provide a “crash” introduction to two discrete areas - namely, international economic integration covering the law of the World Trade Organization and developments in regional integration, as well as basic knowledge on the law of the European Union (EU).
