Inhalt |
The global financial crisis of 2007/09 and the subsequent Eurozone crisis forced governments and central banks to take unprecedented steps in order to stabilize the global financial system. Policies adopted in response to this twin crisis will profoundly influence and shape the financial and monetary systems for the foreseeable future. Moreover, digitalization is swiftly changing the way financial services are produced and distributed. This course explores the impact of these and other developments on the institutional and legal framework of the financial and monetary systems.
The course starts with a review of the legal and economic concepts of money, with a focus on new developments like virtual and crypto currencies. It then discusses the institutional framework for the production of sovereign (fiat) money, including central bank governance and independence. A third part will provide an overview of the international monetary system and financial architecture, including the role of international financial standard setters, using the “too big to fail” regulatory reform as a case study. |
