Inhalt The course focuses on the emergence, expansion, and enforcement of international human rights norms. It introduces the major international institutions and political processes by which international human rights norms are established and enforced, namely the regimes established under the United Nations, regional human rights conventions (European, Inter-American, African), and the various treaties.
The course is divided into two parts: the first part introduces the evolution and conceptual foundations of human rights, the most important human rights treaties and the mechanisms for their implementation; the second part considers selected, current human rights guarantees (e.g. the right to life, prohibition of torture) and cross-cutting issues (e.g. human rights and the environment, business and human rights etc.in a comparative mode using standards developed in international human rights law as well as regional (e.g. European) standards.
As the course will be held in a seminar-like style, i.e. emphasizing class discussions, active preparation for and participation in the class is expected.
