Inhalt John Stuart Mill (1806-73) was one of the most influential English-speaking philosophers in the 19th century. He follows in the tradition of British empiricism. His publications span a wide area of topics. His most influential books are: System of Logic (1843), On Liberty (1859), Utilitarism (1861), The Subjection of Women (1869), and Three Essays on Religion (1874). Our seminar will focus mainly on three main areas: Mills a-priori, deductive scientific method, his view on economics and the “economic man”, and his version of "Utilitarianism".
Lernziele Our seminar reviews the intellectual tradition to which John Stuart Mill contributed. We will read both his original analysis and secondary interpretations of his distinct views. Following the course, students will be able to describe Mil’s views on methodology, economics and utilitarianism. Students will also be able to critically engage with these views. Finally, students will have worked their way through original 19th century philo-sophical material and modern academic texts critical towards Mill’s position.
