Politics is ultimately about building compromise in conditions of social conflict. This seminar adresses the fundamental socio-economic conflicts affecting the development of political systems, and encourages students to reflect on the most salient factors of political change in order to foster their understanding of contemporary social and political divisions. A key concept in our discussion are social cleavages. The students will familiarize with the classic account of cleavage politics (Lipset & Rokkan, 1967) and learn about the four fundamental social cleavages in industrial societies, before moving on to more recent research on political change in post-industrial societies. Among the further discussed topics are the role of gender and religion in politics; class voting and social mobility; civic culture and social capital; political socialization and postmaterialist value change. In the last part of the seminar, we will also discuss the recent success of populist parties in Europe and beyond, and analyse these developments from a social cleavage perspective. |
