This seminar explores the political dynamics in Central and Eastern Europe since the fall of communism in 1989. It pursues three main objectives. First, the seminar aims to understand the main challenges pertaining to the transition to democracy experienced in Central and Eastern Europe, and some of the key factors that have fed into democratic erosion in the region, such as pervasive corruption, clientelism and state capture. These will be analysed through the prism of communist legacies, with a view to developing an in-depth understanding of the communist regime and its implications for society today. Secondly, the seminar aims to identify the particularities of party politics in the region, compared to politics in Western Europe. The main electoral issues that are routinely raised by political elites during election campaigns will be analysed, along with the trends in voting behaviour and the nature of political and civic participation in the region. Given the growing support for populist and far-right parties in Central and Eastern Europe, and across Europe more generally, the seminar will analyse the specific practices of local leaders and parties, and will consider the potential to counteract support for populists, racists and extremists. Finally, the seminar aims to consider the role of international actors in the region, looking closely at the role played by the EU and Russia in the past, present and future development of politics and society in Central and Eastern Europe.
