The ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine comes as a painful reminder that war on European soil does not only belong to history books. It comes in the wake of a decade that saw the resurgence of ethno-territorial conflicts that, while falling short of violence, have spanned the continent from East to West. From Catalonia’s attempt to secede from Spain to the decision of the British people to leave the European Union and the Russian annexation or Crimea, territorial conflicts have struck back in a vengeance in today’s European politics. In this course, we will explore the relationship between territory and ethnicity and how it produces various forms of political conflicts in a broad comparative perspective. The seminar is divided into two blocks. The first block (THEORY) explores the root causes of territorial conflict (history, language, economics, politics) and introduces the main approaches to territorial conflict management (territorial autonomy and consociationalism). Students will become familiar with the main theoretical debates in the field. In the second block (CASES), we will apply them to various configurations of conflicts in contemporary Europe, ranging from cases of state disintegration (Yugoslavia), independence in Europe (Scotland and Catalonia), independence from Europe (Brexit), partially recognised states at the margin of Europe (North Cyprus and Kosovo, irredentism (Crimea) and conquest (Ukraine). Through case studies dragged from all corners of the continent, participants will be exposed to comparative research methods, and be encouraged to use them for their own research purposes.
