The withdrawal of the United States from the JCPOA, the trade war between China and the United States and the Russian Invasion of Ukraine. The international political and economic order is undergoing rapid change, with policy makers requesting contemporary research on economic statecraft to understand how to shape international institutions, trade policy, and economic sanctions policy. This course introduces such research, providing first an overview of recent changes in the political world order and different opinions on the scope and extent of the development. In the second part, we dive into research on the political economy of trade, analysing the main theories of trade and its linkages to democracy and conflicts. We connect this research to discussions on the future of multilateralism and the WTO as well as the increase in protectionism and trade disputes. The third part of the seminar focuses on economic sanctions research. We discuss the (un-)intended consequences of sanctions, their likelihood of reaching their stated goals and the motivations to initiate them. Then, we move towards new developments in sanctions research concerning, most importantly, the weaponization of the international financial system and the turn towards targeted sanctions. |
| Lernziele |
The objective of the seminar is to obtain an overview of the multi-dimensional and interdisciplinary field of the political economy of trade and sanctions, its key theories, and debates. This will be obtained through the individual reading of the literature as well as the open discussions during the seminar classes. Students will further develop their academic research skills over the course of the seminar. |
