| Inhalt |
This course will critically examine the question of how societies respond to their most serious crimes. It is designed to develop students’ analystical socio-legal skills and in particular the application of human rights principles to a specific area of law and criminal justice. It will consider the application of extreme forms of punishment globally, including the use of the death penalty, torture and the most common ultimate sanction, life imprisonment. It will assess the extent to which current law and practice meets international human rights standards. It will also critically examine the role of abolition, and consider alternative approaches to punishing serious crimes. |

• To develop an in-depth understanding of how different societies respond to their most serious crimes.
• To examine key issues associated with the use and application of the death penalty, torture and life imprisonment worldwide.
• To develop critical understanding of key international legal developments and human rights standards that focus on the use and impact of extreme punishments.
• To critically assess the role of abolitionists and alternative approaches to punishing serious crimes. |

There is no single set text for this course. Students will be expected to do some reading in advance of class, which will include select legal sources and case law, official government reports, academic articles and monographs, reports from international organisations and NGO publications. Much of the material should be available online. |
