From the Dreamtime to the Stolen Generation: Anthropological perspectives on Australian Aboriginal Society

Inhalt	Australian Aboriginal societies have fascinated scientific and popular curiosity at least since the beginning of the 19th century. Considered by many to be the “oldest living culture” of humanity, they have also counted among those societies against which any social and cultural theory had to be tested to gain credibility. In this seminar, we will present and discuss the sociocultural elements that make these cultures unique and provide an introduction into their particularities and their social organization. Because they have been so fundamental for the anthropological discipline, an introduction into Australian Aboriginal societies also provides an empirical entry into the social sciences and humanities in general. The seminar will discuss the influence these societies had on some fundamental authors and theories. We will also elaborate on their religious system, called the Dreamtime or Dreaming, as well as gender relationships and analyse how they have evolved in the colonial context. Finally, we will discuss particular contemporary issues such as the assimilationist governmental policy which has produced what is known as the “Stolen Generation”, as well as Indigenous communities’ relationships to mining and economic development.
