The concept of moral
economy has been widely and divergently used across the social sciences to
investigate the values, emotions, and practices that have informed and inspired
modern social formations. Taking a broadly cultural anthropology approach, this
seminar explores how economics structures modern lives and social processes.
What links do we establish between morality and economic activity? How might be
define ‘economy’ in broad terms as a set of relations? How has everyday
economic life been shaped by, and shaped, moral discourses? How are goods
valued and exchanged? How can anthropologists account for the complexity of the
economy? Together, we discuss classic economic anthropological texts but
focuses most closely on contemporary societies. Throughout, we will also pay
close attention to the moral and gendered aspects of economic processes,
including people’s aspirations for a future with more wealth or more justice,
or both. |
