| Inhalt |
This
lecture is meant to create another bridge between the three disciplines
involved in PPE. However, it is also open to non-PPE students! We will
introduce central topics of PPE (and beyond) such as rationality, game theory,
welfare, social choice theory, egalitarianism, utilitarianism, ethical limits
to markets, discounting and climate change, justice, free riding, well-being,
liberalism, neoliberalism etc. The idea of the lecture is to contextualize
these topics, to offer some history and also, if necessary, to offer
possibilities for critique. The perspective adopted is mostly philosophical but
political science and economics will have their word. Also, we will always
attempt to discuss theoretical concepts with reference to concrete examples or
case studies.
The
lecture will partly follow the so-called flipped classroom model (to explained
in the first lecture) which means that part of the lecture will be recorded
first by instructors and watched at home by students. The classroom session
then is meant to open up space for questions and discussions. It's a rather new
teaching method for many of us so let's see how it works! |

The central text for the lecture is: Daniel Hausman, Michael McPherson, Debra Satz, Economic Analysis, Moral Philosophy, and Public Policy (Cambridge University Press 2017, 3rd edition).
Other main references will be Elizabeth Anderson, Value in Ethics and Economics (Harvard University Press 1993), Ariel Rubinstein, Economic Fables (Open Book 2012) and Brian Barry, Sociologists, Economists and Democracy (MacMillan 1970). |
