The course is focused on the core themes that define modern Israeli identity: religion, the history of the Holocaust, war and conflict, societal challenges of a multi-ethnic country, gender themes, and the rebirth of the Hebrew language. These themes significantly informed the evolution of an idiosyncratic narrative in Israeli visual culture. Israeli expression and self-perception are represented in different artistic mediums such as fine art, photography, TV and New Media, animation and cinema in Israel today. The biblical prohibition against creating ‘graven images’ goes back to the Second Commandment. The rabbinical authorities, basing their argument on the Hebrew Bible, forbade creating pictorial imagery. Consequentially, traditional Jewish culture was mainly connected with literary arts. For many centuries, visual arts only had a minor role in Jewish culture. The emergence of Zionism, legacy of the Holocaust and the foundation of the State of Israel in 1948 created a new vision of Jewish Art. A unique and sometimes contradictory visual culture emerged, deeply rooted in Jewish religious, ethnic, historical and political experiences and traditions, and secular life. The aim of the course is to introduce students to the Israeli self-image and its interpretation in a variety of artistic mediums.
