Inhalt
This course is aimed at providing a general introduction to the history of British empire in the Indian sub-continent between c. 19-20th centuries. It gives an overview of the major topics in modern Indian history, and the major historiographical debates. Using key texts, the course intends to give insight into how the colonial state functioned in the Indian subcontinent, the experience of the colonised, as well as themes that remain contentious in historiography. Moreover, the inclusion of archival sources during lectures is meant for students to develop a critical understanding of how history of South Asia has been written, to develop critical analytical skills, and to learn reading sources against the grain.
No prior knowledge of South Asian history is necessary. The objective of the class is to lay a solid foundation of history of colonialism through the case of the British empire in the Indian subcontinent. India is projected to be one of the largest growing economies in the world, emerging as key player in world geopolitics. Its colonial past holds importance for understanding how empires functioned, how colonisation was exercised in day to day life, and its lasting legacies. The region was also strategic for circulation of labour, capital, and ideas within and beyond the British empire. The case of India thus exposes students to postcolonial and subaltern perspectives, aiming to critically question and rethink Eurocentric histories.
