The objective of this course is to provide students with a broad introduction to the field of public health and to enable them with the skills to design their own public health intervention. The first part of the course focuses on core concepts and theoretical frameworks, while also offering an overview of the public health landscape in Switzerland. Building on this foundation, the second part introduces essential public health methodologies, including principles of epidemiology and key study designs. The final part of the course explores selected topics in public health and practical applications in public health practice.
The course is structured into three thematic blocks:
Block One
Introduction: What is public health?
• Core concepts, frameworks, and essentials in public health services
• Overview of public health in Switzerland: key actors, institutions, and national strategies
• Introduction to public health intervention development
Block Two
Fundamentals of public health
• Public health monitoring and surveillance and fundamentals of epidemiology
• Study designs: cross-sectional studies, case-control studies, cohort studies, randomized controlled trials
Block Three
Special topics in public health
• Health determinants and understanding health inequalities
• Global health: communicable and non-communicable diseases
• Community health |
