Power, authority, and domination thread through the dynamic interplay of local, national, and international realms, their stakes perhaps sharper than ever. This seminar series delves into these forces through an anthropological lens, casting Pacific societies as a compelling window into the entanglements of social structures, cultural identities, and political hierarchies. How do theories—from Foucault’s regimes of truth and Bourdieu’s cultural capital to Mbembe’s necropolitics—illuminate these currents, and what do illustrations from the Pacific and beyond reveal about their span across scales? Engaging with material and immaterial tensions, we’ll trace how power operates and converges over time, inviting debate across past and present socio-political relationships.
