Inhalt |
The European Union (EU) is a unique supranational organization by international standards. Its member states have transferred extensive and, in some cases, complete national sovereignty rights to the European level. At the same time, the EU exerts considerable influence on neighboring countries, for example, within the framework of the European Economic Area.
To facilitate a comparative analysis, this seminar deliberately views the EU as a political system that shares similarities and differences with "classical" nation-state political systems. Accordingly, we will examine principles of the political separation of powers as well as EU legislation across various policy areas.
The seminar follows a theoretically guided and empirically grounded approach. It provides a comprehensive overview of the history of European integration and current academic and policy debates on the future of the EU. Furthermore, the seminar will use case studies to examine selected aspects of European politics, such as the bilateral relations between the EU and Switzerland.
|

Prüfung |
Regular and active participation; in-depth lecture of the readings; In-class presentation (“Referat”): ca. 20 minutes.
In-class presentation: The topic should be discussed with the class instructor at least one week before the respective session, either via Email or Zoom.
The in-class presentation is given by one student in one of the sessions. The objective is for students to practice how to present a complex topic in a compelling and easily understandable way. Students shall develop and answer an overall research question by presenting the key arguments of the readings and/or providing additional material. Each presentation should last no longer than 20 minutes, followed by an in-class discussion with fellow students led by the presenter and the class instructor.
To make the presentation and discussion more meaningful, students should prepare some guiding questions in advance. The topic, content, and structure of the presentation should be discussed with the class instructor at least one week before the presentation. Therefore, students should have prepared a preliminary content overview and three guiding questions for the meeting.
Students are encouraged to make use of Power Point slides or other digital tools (videos, surveys, etc.).
If they decide to do so, they should send the slides and/or the other material at least three days before the session to Lucas.Schramm@gsi.uni-muenchen.de. On the day of the presentation, a one-page handout with the guiding question(s) and the main takeaways should be printed for the fellow students. The final seminar grade will be based on the presentation. |
