Inhalt |
Since the 1980s, economic inequality has risen sharply across advanced democracies, reshaping political and social landscapes. This course offers an interdisciplinary examination of the causes and consequences of economic inequality, with a focus on the United States and Europe. We begin by defining and measuring inequality, before exploring its evolution over time and across regions. Students will engage with core questions such as: Why does inequality matter? How does it affect political preferences, representation, and democratic legitimacy? And what are the psychological, social, and environmental implications of rising inequality? The course will also address citizens’ attitudes toward inequality, protest movements, and policy responses—including innovative solutions like universal basic income. Through readings, discussion, and research, students will critically assess the interplay between inequality and democracy in the 21st century.
