International survey programs generate huge data sets of high quality. Social scientists use these to compare nations and regions. Survey data enables comparative studies on almost all big topics such as social inequality, social capital (trust or social isolation), health, media use as well as on migration, ageing and other issues related to social change.
Comparative research asks how to compare different cultures and how to identify equivalent meaning (e.g. of survey questions) in different countries and regions. In world regions, as Europe, more and more comparative research is done, focusing on transnational units and transnational processes. Nations are embedded in supernational political and cultural contexts (as the European Union), national boundaries can be split up analytically and subunits can be regrouped into more coherent comparative units. Comparative social research transforms its perspective towards multinational, multiregional, and multicultural analysis.
In the research seminar students will proceed their own research project based on the European Social Survey program (https://www.europeansocialsurvey.org/). Students develop research questions based on social science concepts. The research seminar will introduce concepts, skills and methods of comparative survey research. The main contents of the research seminar are the strategies, problems and standards of production, distribution and analysis of comparative survey data. Data quality issues will be covered. Multivariate statistical methods (as multiple correspondence analysis and multilevel analysis) will be employed to pursue students’ comparative research interests.
