Weitere Daten For each class, there will be a lecture that covers the main concepts and provides the theoretical context of each week’s topic, and an applied part primarily from academic journals, with student presentations and class discussion. To this end, required reading will be assigned before each session. There will be set questions for each week to guide your reading; students should then be prepared to answer them in the class.
Umfang 2 Semesterwochenstunden
Inhalt The course aims to equip students with key analytical tools and concepts used by economists to examine health care policies in low- and middle-income countries. It adopts a microeconomic perspective, focusing on how individuals within health systems—such as patients, providers, and insurers—make decisions that influence the use and provision of care.

Core theoretical frameworks are combined with empirical evidence, with an emphasis on policy-relevant issues in low- and middle-income contexts. The course is highly applied, using case studies to expose students to diverse data and forms of evidence. Through this approach, students learn to analyze individual decision-making and develop informed health policy recommendations.
Lernziele By the end of the course the student should be able to:
- Define fundamental principles and concepts of health economics relevant to health policy challenges in low- and middle-income countries
- Understand the economic models of decisions made by individuals on the demand- and supply-side of health care markets in low and middle-income countries
- Use economic frameworks and analytical models to diagnose issues and propose appropriate health care policies
- Critically review studies on healthcare financing, health interventions and global health policy in low-income countries
- Demonstrate the ability to interpret basic findings from empirical economic studies and translate them into well-founded policy recommendations
Voraussetzungen Some concepts of economic theory and econometrics will be reviewed in class, but students are expected to have a good knowledge of microeconomics and econometrics.
