Inhalt Continued cost pressures on all areas of healthcare delivery (inpatient, outpatient, pharmaceuticals) call into question how healthcare payment can be used to bring new incentives into the delivery of care and related payment mechanisms. Recent innovative payment models applied in other countries have caught the attention of policymakers with promising results. These results may be related to the specific healthcare system they were developed in and/or positive selection (bias) of providers and/or consumers.

All relevant payment models in the healthcare financing for providers and insurers are presented and reviewed. The course also includes an overview of the Swiss healthcare context. The first four sessions (weeks 1, 2, 4 and 5 of the semester) will include theory and inputs from the lecturers and guest lecturers. The final three sessions (weeks 10-12 in the semester) will be presentations from the students (each group with up to three students).

Students will present a case study/review of an innovative payment model found in another country outside of Switzerland (model, context, results) and also present how this type of model could be implemented in Switzerland . The presentation will cover what facilitators exist and what barriers would need to be overcome for successful implementation. Final grades will be based on group presentation (50%) and final group paper (50%).

We are pleased to again invite VBHC Suisse (vbhc.ch), an organisation dedicated to advancing value-based healthcare in Switzerland, to attend the group presentation sessions during the course. Based on these presentations and final papers, they will select the best-performing student group, who will be offered the opportunity to present their work at the organisation's annual meeting in 2027. This offers students a unique opportunity to highlight their work to a professional audience of healthcare practitioners, policymakers and industry leaders. The annual conference offers students a great chance to learn more about current VBHC efforts in Switzerland, engage in discussions, and build their professional network.
Lernziele The main learning outcome of this course is to assess innovative payment models from different countries and identify crucial barriers and facilitators that would need to be considered before a proposed implementation in the Swiss market.

Students will be able to explain:
* various models of healthcare payment: fee-for service, capitation, pay for performance, value-based healthcare models, including their pros and cons, evidence of their impact
* premium design, risk adjustment
Voraussetzungen Students should be familiar with health economic concepts either from courses in the Master of Health Sciences or from the Master of Economics. Details available in week 1 or upon request from the lecturers.
