The course examines the sources, development, expansion, and enforcement of international human rights norms. It introduces the key international institutions and political processes through which these norms are created and implemented, focusing on the systems established under the United Nations, as well as regional human rights regimes (European, Inter-American, and African). Core treaties, selected human rights guarantees, and current thematic issues are discussed in depth.
The course is structured in two parts. The first part explores the historical evolution and conceptual foundations of human rights, the major human rights treaties, and the mechanisms designed to ensure their implementation. The second part deals with selected substantive rights (such as the right to life and the prohibition of torture) and cross-cutting issues (including human rights and the environment, or business and human rights) from a comparative perspective, drawing on both international and regional standards.
Conducted in a seminar-style format, the course emphasizes interactive discussion. Students are expected to engage actively through regular preparation, participation, and critical reflection on the assigned materials. |
