Public international law is often described as the backbone of a “rules-based international order”, yet this order is increasingly contested and fragmented. The workshop explores whether and how the contemporary international legal order is in crisis by examining legal, political, and institutional challenges to the so-called rules-based international order. It focuses on selected current issues in public international law, such as the erosion of multilateralism, contested uses of force, climate and environmental litigation, cyber operations, and the increasing politicization of international courts and institutions.
The workshop is structured in three parts. Following an introductory and organizational session at the beginning of the term, students work in small groups (3–4 students) and choose specific topics related to the overarching theme “Public International Law in Crisis? Challenges to the Rules-Based International Order”. They prepare research-based presentations and short papers engaging critically with primary sources (treaties, case law, UN documents) and scholarly debates.
During the research and writing phase, there are no regular weekly meetings; instead, students receive individual and group supervision to develop research questions, argumentation structures, and writing skills. In the final weeks of the term, the groups present and discuss their findings in class, allowing for in-depth debate on how contemporary crises and contestations may transform or reinforce the international legal order. |
