This seminar examines Schelling’s Freiheitschrift, focusing on his conception of human freedom and its relation to the problem of evil. His response to pantheism will be read alongside relevant sections from Spinoza’s Ethics. We will also contextualize Schelling's project within the larger tradition of theodicy, including a discussion of Augustine and Leibniz’s solutions, and the Pantheism controversy. |
| Lernziele |
By the end of this course students should:
- Develop an understanding of Schelling’s Freiheitsschrift and his conception of human freedom.
- Analyze Schelling’s treatment of the problem of evil and his response to pantheism.
- Situate Schelling’s project within the broader tradition of theodicy, including the solutions of Augustine and Leibniz.
