The Philippines' rich history and cultural connections extend far beyond its archipelagic boundaries. For centuries, the diverse polities have been entangled in webs of exchange and interaction, regionally and globally - from the Asia Pacific to the Middle East, Europe, and the Americas. Switzerland also shares deep historical ties with the Philippines. This course examines the interconnected yet diverse lifeways and circumstances of the Philippines' heterogeneous populations, including in the contexts of migration and diaspora. We will unpack the complexity of social relations through the lens of sociality, exploring what binds people together, including notions of personhood, gender relations, kinship, belonging, friendship, conviviality, and commensality. We will also examine the conditions that can disrupt and challenge our understanding of social relations, such as precarity and growing wealth disparity driven by contemporary global capitalism. By exploring how relational processes emerge within specific social, political, and economic contexts, we will scrutinise assumptions of social life in the Philippines and beyond. |
