| Inhalt |
This course is aimed at students interested in studying how different communication tools and platforms are used in modern political campaigning, as well as their consequences for voters’ attitudes and behavior.
The course begins with an introduction to key psychological concepts in political communication and foundational literature in media studies. We then move on to examine various contemporary media platforms and tools used in political campaigning. The focus of the course is twofold. First, it introduces students to recent research on the role of social media in politics. Second, it explores how these platforms and tools influence individuals’ voting behavior and political attitudes.
The course covers a wide range of communication platforms. For text-, image-, and video-based platforms, we focus on widely used platforms such as X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and TikTok. We also examine emerging communication formats, including the role of podcasts in political campaigning.
Regarding the role of AI in politics, we first analyze how AI tools are currently used in political campaigns, with a particular focus on social media. We then examine cutting-edge research on how AI may reshape individuals’ political attitudes and beliefs.
In terms of geographic scope, the course compares research from Western democracies with research from the Global South where such work is available and comparison is possible.
Throughout the course, students are expected to read, analyze, and critically engage with academic publications on political communication that employ statistical methods. While some knowledge of quantitative methods is advantageous, it is not required.
